Who is World of Warcraft Killer
Four years have passed since World of Warcraft officially launched. And now, World of Warcraft is the most popular and commercially successful MMORPG in the world. The last numbers from Blizzard indicated that in January 2008, World of Warcraft has passed the 10 million mark, and many players are wondering whether World of Warcraft has peaked or not. Among the multitude of highly anticipated MMORPGs coming out, will there be a WoW killer? |

As NCsoft announced the development of Aion in May 2006, many players start to expect more details of this game. At E3 2006, NCsoft first released game features and promotion video. On October 31, 2007, Korean closed beta was confirmed, and now, Aion is in the 3rd Korean CBT and English version is comfired to be launch in 2009.
2: Aion: Perfect Combination of Two Styles
Western MMOs built on the EverQuest/World of Warcraft model offer incident-packed questing, spectacular dungeons, relatively fast levelling, deft storytelling and universes rich in detail and lore, peopled by grotesque anthropomorphic cartoons clad in spiked, primary-coloured fetish wear. Can't we have a life of beauty and ease? NCsoft thinks so, and Aion: Tower of Eternity is the result.

1: WAR kills AoC, not WoW
The most frequently asked question I got now the WAR NDA dropped was "Is WAR the WoW killer". Answer: No, it is not, don't be silly. WAR will take a large bite out of WoW subscription numbers, but not enough to cause WoW to die. In my opinion Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is of similar quality as World of Warcraft, doing some things better, some things worse, and having a different focus for the end game.
2: Warhammer Won't Be a WoW Killer
EA Mythic responded their upcoming MMORPG Warhammer: The Age of Reckoning won't be a World of Warcraft killer. "We're not going to hit the same numbers as WoW." said by EA General Manager Mark Jacobs. While EA CEO John Riccitiello said: "Warhammer Online will be a strong entry in the MMORPG space, but will not rival WoW."

I think that very few games out (or coming out) have a chance to beat WoW. The trick is to get something that people don't get with WoW. Many people heard about the "ground breaking new combat system" in AoC and switched over, many were disapointed and floated back towards WoW. That alone was proof, WoW lost alot of members because of something NEW.
If games just come out with the same old MMO with the same old features, it'll go nowhere Aion has flying and a PvP focused system. This is a possible game for many players of WoW that are more into PvP, along with a serious upgrade in graphics and a sweet arial combat system. Blade & Soul, another game scheduled to come out has a high chance to rise in popularity due to its unique fighting style, visual effects, and other cool features such as running on walls (think of Prince of Persia), and the fact that it looks as if a company took an arcade fighter (like Street Fghter or Tekken) and turned it into an MMORPG.
These games could appeal to many of WoW's players because....there's simply no other games like these out. The way to succees in taking down somethign as strong as WoW is to come up with somethign that WoW doesn't have, something so awesome that people will flood your games servers and never look back at WoW. Originality is key, WoW has everything the "typical" MMO does...and more. |

I believe if Blade & Soul and Aion are as good as they say they are going to be then I think they will have a very good chance at being a WOW Killer. I saw the gameplay for Aion when The MMO Report did a special on it, its pretty amazing, the graphics are really good. WAR isn't even out yet, so who knows, but you can never say for sure who will be a WOW Killer till something comes out or Beta starts for something.
For all we know Guild Wars 2 could be a WOW killer, but we are still waiting for word on that. Plus, I heard a lot of people who are playing WOW right now are quitting when the WoTLK comes out which I highly doubt because the person who said that was my sister and she'll probably NEVER quit.Full size |
