Game Design Team

Interview with Jay Kim, the director of KalOnline
.

MMOsite.com: Tell us someting about your team - numbers, roles, levels of experience, etc?

Jay Kim: Right now, four people are working in the game design team for KalOnline. Frankly, we don t play KalOnline much but we always play KalOnline everyday for 60~90minutes. All my team mates have 4-7years of experiences in gaming industry and I ve worked on 3 different MMOGs except KalOnline since 1998.

MMOsite.com: How does game design work proceed during game development? For movies and TV dramas, someone writes a script, hands it over to the director, and the project begins. I would assume that things are much different for game development.

Jay Kim: Actually, our working progress of development is not much different from the movies or dramas but the difference is that we make the scripts and/or concepts of systems of KalOnline then, the engineers will make them to be the parts of the game.

MMOsite.com: Can you tell us your experience in game script writing? How different do you think it is from writing a novel, movie script, etc.?

Jay Kim: Writing game scripts is more like writing a never ending story; you have to write so many short stories that are related to the one main big story of the game.

MMOsite.com: Tell us about your first experience playing a MMO game.

Jay Kim: My first MMOG is MUonline which is similar to Diablo. That time, I loved to play Diablo that s why I start MUonline. The graphics and effects of the game were great. However, there re not enough systems for community which is the most important thing for MMOGs in my opinion.

MMOsite.com: What type of games do you like most? Which game are you playing? Which game gives you the deepest impression in the story?

Jay Kim: Final Fantasy(RPG) series is my all time favorite and currently, I m playing Final Fantasy3 for Nintendo DS. I know it is a remake from old one but I think the story and systems are just perfect and every RPG should be owned.

MMOsite.com: How do you get your source of inspiration, by reading books, watching movies or playing games?

Jay Kim: All ideas are coming from every thing like movies, books, dreams and even when I talk with my friends. The important thing is not how you think and how are you going to express in the game.

MMOsite.com: Has the team been visiting the boards and reading the fans input, suggestions, and concerns?  If so, what are some of the staff favorites and possible things that may be put in game?

Jay Kim: To be honest, we can t spend much time to read all the board but we try to read the board on the official website. Also we get fan s responses regulary from our GMs. Right now, I talk about much about future updates with GMs and try to develop better game. I can only say briefly that we re working on an expansion of duel system.
