Dark and Light has an introduction of 4 different archetypes. Each of them carries out a primary function, which will then be refined and specialized with the choice of the class. The 4 archetypes are: fighters, healers, mages and hunters. Their roles are very different.

The Fighter
The fighter will be the mainstay of the group during fights. He/she will be the one with the task of holding the enemy back and protecting the others. He/she will be at the heart of the battle and will have to take the hits and support his/her mates. The fighter is not necessarily essential for small battles, but as soon as the enemy gets strong or numerous, the fighter becomes indispensable since he/she is the only one able to properly hold them back. Those who choose this archetype will benefit from considerable defensive abilities, thanks to their plate armor, their diversified competences, and their techniques that make it possible for them to draw the enemies on themselves. Aside from pure fighting, the fighters always have the principal task to control the enemys aggressiveness, to keep them from attacking the weak members of his/her group. The fighter can become a Shadow knight, a Warrior, or a Paladin.

The Hunter
Hunters are the second archetype. They are also fighters, but they use less powerful and more tactful techniques. They are more versatile and are useful as offensive support for the group. They help to hit the enemy faster, to draw its attention and to control it more easily. They deal more damage than warriors, but have a weaker defense and the number of weapons they have at their disposal is smaller. These classes are thus more centered on tactics and will have to move around the enemy instead of engaging in brutal toe-to-toe fights. The available classes are Archers, Rangers, Bards and Thieves. The bard is a little different from the other in this archetype, as he/she has a support only function, at the expense of damage dealing capabilities.

The Healer
Healers are the third archetype, probably the most essential one; they are the cornerstone of a group. As such, everyone who takes this path is able to keep their group alive and in normal condition. To do it, they use several more or less efficient procedures, depending of the situation. They also have a range of spells they can use to defend or attack by themselves, and each one more or less complements one of the other archetypes. All healers are able to revive friends, heal them or boost their usefulness. The healer can become a Cleric, a Monk, an Enchanter, or a Druid.

The Mage
Finally, by their conception, mages are the archetype that offers the most extreme classes. They often disregard defense in exchange for powerful and crushing spells, or to be fully devoted to control and negate offensive magic. They all play an important role when grouped, giving appreciated advantages to both defensive and offensive sides. Their magic also lets them use unique and irreplaceable skills. Mages can become an Illusionist, a Necromancer or, a Wizard.

In a more general perspective, no archetype will be completely necessary for a group to operate, and many classes can compensate for a missing archetype. However, they are complementary and mutually reinforced, this way, diversity is encouraged. Thus, they will have more or less affinities and inverse classes. Every archetype will provide enough means to properly defend yourself, and to evolve as a loner, even if some will be a greater challenge for players. Particular attention has been given to healers, to avoid their complete dependency on a group.
