The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar
Were a little bit past the mad fervor of Lord of the Rings fandom that the Peter Jackson movies elicited, but in terms of Shadows of Angmar, thats almost immaterial. The fan base is built in hardcore MMORPG players have been anticipating this one as an exciting inevitability and with the classic status of the Lord of the Rings property, theres immediate interest.
Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Mortal Kombat Armageddon is the raucous send-off of Mortal Kombat in the current hardware generation. Mortal Kombat had a pretty good time of it on this gen‘s hardware, actually in Deadly Alliance it reinvented itself as a cool martial arts-based fighter while still maintaining the appeal of the original series. With Deception, it added a mess of additional distractions that made the offering less of a game and more of an arcade.
Stranglehold
If youre making a gun-themed action game, you could do worse than to look to John Woos classic Hong Kong film Hard Boiled for inspiration. The film is a masterpiece of battle choreography, a true genre classic. Bits have been appropriated from it here and there for other games, but the style is certainly the kind of thing the medium is capable of inheriting in all its bloody glory.
Unreal Tournament 2007
UT2K7 is a bit further off than Epics other project, the Microsoft-published Gears of War. In a lot of ways though, its just as exciting its built on Unreal Engine 3 technology, naturally, and hardware-defying screenshots have been trickling out for the last year. Looking excellent is part of the history of the Unreal series, but this game truly looks astounding.
