AIAS (Annual Interactive Achievement Awards) is known as video game Oscars, and it includes over 20 awards. Now the list of nominees has been announced, and the major awards include Game of the Year, Action Game of the Year , Adventure Game of the Year, Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year, etc. The winners will be announced on February 9, 2012 in Las Vegas.

Uncharted 3 is likely to win big this time, and it's prequel done that before
Of course all nominees are the best games we can play in the past year, but when you take a close look at the list, there is only one MMORPG that gets nominated, and it's Star Wars: The Old Republic. BioWare's first MMORPG is nominated for Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year, and take a look at SWTOR's rivals, Dark Souls, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Skyrim, The Witcher 2. Skyrim has received praise worldwide but SWTOR just released a month ago, and it seems that the only MMORPG at AIAS just gets a slim chance.

Perhaps SWTOR is a good game, but its release in the last month of 2011 isn't an adventage for it
MMORPG isn't a big genre in video game industry, and it isn't since the beginning. Although there are hundreds, even thousands of MMOs release to the market these years, very few of them succeed. What about the innovation? We haven't had a real next-gen MMORPGs 2011 though we always talk about next-gen.
Or I can say that MMORPG actually makes no progress in recent years. A proof is that AIAS cancelled Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year after 2009 and integrated it into Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year. Do you remember what MMORPGs won the awards when it was still an independent category? EQ, WOW, and Guild Wars - each of them was kind of explosive game at that time. WOW, a MMO that released in 2004 won the 2008 and 2009 awards with its 2 expansions, isn't it a satire to the MMO market?
Hopefully when the next AIAS comes, we'll see the return of Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year, and Guild Wars 2, Tera, ArcheAge as the nominees.
