Star Trek Online, a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game based on the popular science fiction franchise, is going to launch Season 11 this October. Recently MMOsite was honored to have an interview with Steve Ricossa, the executive producer for Star Trek Online. Check below for the detailed interview.

Hello, thank you for taking the time for this interview. First, would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

Anytime! I'm Steve Ricossa, the executive producer for Star Trek Online. I've been at Cryptic Studios for almost 7 years. I've been working on Star Trek Online the entire time, and as a lifelong "Star Trek" fan, I feel so privileged to lead this game.

It's nice to know that Star Trek Online is going to launch season 11 this October. What new content can we expect?

Season 11 will have some great content in addition to a brand new storyline for 2016. We'll have two episodes in the launch window, four episodes as part of the Cardassian Arc Update, two new queues centered around DS9, a new space battlezone that takes place in the Badlands, and the new Admiralty System. All in all, there is a ton of exciting new content here for everyone.

I have read from the official announcement that a new Admiralty system will be added in this update. Could you tell us more about this system?

Admiralty is similar to the Duty Officer System in that you send something to bring you back something, though the similarities stop there. How you interact with Admiralty has been completely re-designed in order to reward a more active involvement on a tactical and strategic level. From ship stats to assignment selection, all the way down to the number of active assignments you can have running, there are fewer – but far more impactful – choices to be made. The Admiralty System requires you to put more thought into your choices in order to earn greater rewards, and provides a true feeling of an Admiral in control of a fleet.

For those players who hit the level cap, will there be any new end-game content for them to challenge?

Our queues and space battlezone will be tied to a new Mirror Universe reputation, which will provide another avenue to earn powerful and attractive end-game gear. The queues will come in all flavors of difficulty, with the elite mode providing the largest challenge in difficulty.

Will you hold any exciting events to celebrate the launch of Season 11?

We're definitely going to have events before and after the launch of Season 11, but you'll have to stay tuned for details!

Did you encounter any problems while developing season 11?

Any form of game development runs into issues. People get sick or fall behind, or something may be more complicated than we thought. We simply have to rescope our tasks, make adjustments to the schedule, and track the changes closely until the entire feature is complete. As a long-running project, we've pretty much seen it all, so we just need to make sure we're checking in and reviewing as often as possible so we can find and correct issues as they pop up.

It has been years since the launch of Star Trek Online, and there are still lots of gamers interested in it. What do you think is the main reason for its success?

I think one of the main reasons for our success is that the vast majority of the team members for Star Trek Online are huge "Star Trek" fans, and it shows in the work we do for the game. We want everything to be as canon-accurate as possible, to pick up those abandoned story threads from the show and tell you what your favorite characters are up to. I would say all of that plus some pretty exciting space combat make STO a huge draw for the "Star Trek" and general Sci-Fi fan.

Would you mind telling us more about your future plans for Star Trek Online?

Now that we've wrapped up the Iconian War, we want to get into a more optimistic post-war story. That new story begins with Season 11 and will extend deep into 2016, featuring new stories themed around time travel. While I won't get into any details beyond that, I have scheduled plans that take us through October of 2016 that I'm really excited to eventually tell everyone about.

Season 11 is a great time to jump back into STO if you've ever played, or try it out if you've never played it before. You'll have access to the massive amount of content we've already shipped, and you'll be part of the initial run of our brand new story content. I look forward to seeing all of you in game!
