At PAX Prime this year, ArenaNet brought a big news to all the Guild Wars 2 fans. Not only did they announce the release date for the Heart of Thorns expansion, which is October 23, 2015, but they also announced that the base game is now free-to-play starting August 29th.

Although the base game is free for all the gamers, if you want to try the upcoming expansion Heart of Thorns, you still need to spend the money. According to ArenaNet, they made Guild Wars 2 free to play is for encouraging more players to try this game.

"We believe the buy to play, subscription-free model for MMOs is good for players, and it's good for developers," said Mike O'Brien, co-founder and president of ArenaNet. "It gets a little tricky when a buy-to-play MMO introduces an expansion pack, leaving new players guessing about what they need to buy in order to start playing with their friends. As we get ready to release our first expansion for Guild Wars 2, we want to ensure that we keep a simple business model where new players can play the core game for free, while all players need only purchase one thing – Heart of Thorns – to get access to all of our new and future content."

The other big reveal was the 10-player Raids. It will be instanced content that groups can jump into using new Mastery system abilities. The first of these raids will come in three parts, and set to release shortly after the release of Heart of Thorns.
