Perfect World Entertainment has finally brought us the beta for their MMORPG War of the Immortals, their sequel to Battle of the Immortals. The release of the closed beta didn't come without its own issues, which was mostly due to the company wanting to add more content and fix some things before it got released, which resulted in it being delayed two times. Now I have never played Battle of the Immortals, so this will be my perspective of my short play time in War of the Immortals and not a comparison of both games.
Starting off, as always is the character creation. The game gives you the choice between eight different classes in the game, in which all but one is gender locked. That one being the Enchanter or Enchantress as you may as well call it. The only negative I could find about this, was that you get zero information about any of the classes. This forces you to go to their website and see the info about each before selecting. Though being that this is closed beta, I am somewhat suspecting that this is something they will add later, or at least I hope they do.
As for the customization itself, you get the choices between six hairstyles and nine faces to choose from. So it isn't the deepest of customizations, but it is enough to get you a somewhat unique toon. A bit of a huge negative, at least for me in the character customization is that you cannot rotate your character to check out the different hairstyles or how they look overall.
Unfortunately there is no real tutorial in this game; there are hints that move you along and a prologue that guides you through the story of the game, but no actual tutorial. Luckily though, the game isn't complex and the hints are more than enough to get you through the basics of the game.
Now about some of the gameplay, first being skills. The animations for the skills in the game are fairly nice and appeasing to look at. The bad thing though, is that there are so few, and you really have no control over them. By that I mean, in a lot of other mmos when you get skills, you get a skill tree, which of course you use to invest in skills you want and power up ones you need, while forsaking those you do not. This does not have that; you get the skills you get at certain levels. They do tell you which levels you get them at, but the fact you have no control, and even by level 40 you do not have that many to play around with, is a bit of a negative from my perspective. It is not that I need a thousand skills to choose from, I just prefer to have the control to choose and stack the ones I like or at least offer different play style paths for each class, as it is it feels rather static.
Pets in the game are a bit of a nice feature that I wish I could dive a bit more into. In the game you do get combat and mount pets, you actually get the first of each by doing quests and earn some more later via quests. But at least for the combat ones you can catch them if you have the right items. Some features I found a bit neat about this is that you can align stats for your pets to set them up the way you want or need them, pumping STR to get them a bit more hard hitting, or make them a bit more tanky. You also have some other features that, which due to time limitations, I didn't get to touch on such as pet fusion, fortification and other features. The only negative I have found on the pets is that on the control for them you seem limited to have them attack what you attack, or hit nothing. Now why do I find this bad? Well, I went a mage type character while playing, and in some of the dungeons you are in a solo instance, so I would have liked to have had my pet initiate while I dish out the heavy damage, instead of having me tank them all the time.
