The interactive "Magic Mirror" developed by the New York Times R&D Lab, Brian House, adopts Kinect motion-sensing technology. The mirror will read the physical cues of the person standing in front of it. Users can use it to read news, watch videos, or even send SMS. The mirror will give advice on the type of tie which matches the user's shirt. If the user is sick and during the period of taking medication, the mirror can offer drug instructions through scanning the RFID tags on the bottle to help the user know how to take the drug.

Kinect and Surface create future
Microsoft's Kinect technology was initially used for Xbox360's peripheral devices. It captures the player's motion through color camera, 3D deep-level sensor and follow-focus technology, and uses voice instructions or gestures to control the system interface, hence bringing "control-free" gaming and entertainment experience.

In early March 2011, the Guinness World Records rated Kinect as "the Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device". Developed based on newly emerged technology, this device sold a total of 8 million units just within two months after it was released in November 2010, greatly surpassing the number of iPad and iPhone units sold by Apple Inc. around the period, which is unprecedented in the sales history of electronics, foreshowing Kinect technology's development prospect in "future" electronics market.

Apart from conducting R&D relating to "Magic Mirror" and Kinect technology, one of the newest envisions of researchers is to develop a newspaper-type dining table based on Microsoft’s another new technology – Surface.
Currently, MicrosoftSurface which has taken shape is a big touch control computer similar to a coffee table. In the future, it is expected to be seen in dining halls, retail outlets and other places. Touch the screen, and users can order dinner, songs and others. The only difference is that MicrosoftSurface offered in dining halls can provide consumers the photo of the origin of each type of food, as well as what can match the food.
