Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are considered as two milestone Japanese PRGs. However, the glory has gradually faded. The MMO series adapted from these two RPGs disappointed players again and again. Square Enix, the developer of these two series is on the brink of collapse.

In the past, whenever a masterpiece was to be released, people would ditch class or skip work and wait overnight in the long queues, yelling the name of the game to be released. Everyone was hoping to become one of the first gamers to experience the game. Sadly, such days have gone for ever.
In fact, there was a chance for Square Enix to further expand its MMO market after it made Final Fantasy XI a successful MMO. However, Square Enix abandoned Final Fantasy XI and began working on Final Fantasy XIV, a new MMORPG in this series. As we all know, Final Fantasy XIV has been called back for recreation in Japan due to bugs and discontent from players.

While Dragon Quest Online which was adapted from Dragon Quest X had been severely criticized since its official website was launched. The "cloned" official website made Dragon Quest Online the target of public criticism even before the game was released. Dragon Quest Online was proved to be a failure soon after its release, greatly disappointing the loyal fans of Dragon Quest series.
Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy used to be very appealing brand names, so why the MMO versions meet their waterloo? We have to say insufficient preparation is the most important reason. And the other reason is that Square Enix made wrong decisions. In my opinion, Square Enix is not fit to develop MMORPGs.
