Guild Wars 2: A Milestone for MMO-based Competitions

Tony Stark is a virtual world surfer, and enjoy this kinda life. He was a columnist of PC Gamer Taiwan ver. for 2 years before.

ArenaNet released more PvE content at Gamescom 2011 as they had promised, but in my opinion they merely continued the epic style of Guild Wars 2 (short for GW2 below) and they still attached more importance to PvP.

Nevertheless, it was meaningful that ArenaNet Team played an exhibition game against BOON Control in public in ESL's (Electronic Sports League) stage. Just think a while, in which region, electronic sports competitions are carried out most widely and maturely? Not America. Not South Korea either. It is Europe. Electronic Sports League is the largest-scale and fairest third-party electronic sports organization based in Europe (it is absolutely different from the leagues established by Taiwan based game publishers who seek for their own interests). The official website of ESL lists almost all kinds of games which are in pursuit of supreme skills, strategies, fairness and so on and so forth. The only pity is that you can find latest FPS games or RTS games, but no MMO is listed there. What's going on? Anyway, at GamesCom 2011, I found the possibility for MMO to be included in electronic sports competitions.

First of all, GW2 regular point matches do not adopt arena mode but introduce strategy-oriented occupation mode instead. At this point GW2 regular point matches would definitely be pretty enjoyable to spectators since the mode enables players to win by capturing certain areas instead of merely through slaying opponents.

Also, to win GW2 regular point match, one side must work out strategies and tactics better than the opposing side time and time again, and implement their strategies and tactics fast and accurately with skilled manipulation. This will make the matches pretty wonderful. Moreover, the abundant tactics will help prevent embarrassing commentators too often, like commentators will be forced to repeatedly tell boring jokes to avoid awkward silence because players always do the same thing, unable to defeat the opponent (I believe you know which game I am talking about).
