Sony's PlayStation Vita has been on many gamers' shopping list since it's announced, and it will get more buyers with more and more games coming to the next-gen potable console. For MMO players, they may never think of to play an MMO on the 5-inch screen console with very limited numbers of buttons. However, Square Enix seems to try to change MMO players' view as Famitsu reports that the Japanese video game developer is considering porting Final Fantasy XI straightly to PS Vita, though no concrete plan is made at the moment.

According to Hiromichi Tanaka, Ex-FFXIV Producer, it will be a difficult job to port FFXI to PSV because of the complexity of PS3's hardware system. If you still remember, SE has spent a great effort to bring the PS2 originated game to PS3, and now it seems that they will face the similar problem if they want to do it on PS Vita.
An interesting fact another PS3 MMO DUST 514 will also be released in PS Vita. What's different between DUST 514 and FFXI is that DUST 514 is still under development and it's planned for PSV at the beginning while FFXI is a 9-year-old game that may go to a new platform through porting.

On the other hand, even though SE can solve the hardware problem, they have to deal with another one, the control and gameplay. Of course everyone wants to play a game in a comfortable way.
