Gods and Heroes is a new mmos that is still in beta, but not for long. The scheduled release of the game is set for June 21st, so the beta is quickly coming to a close. The game itself is being released by Heatwave Interactive, who seems to be new to the mmo scene as this will be their first downloadable mmo, their other games that are out so far are ones played via Facebook or Twitter. It should also be noted that the game is not going to be free to play, like most games I write about, but instead will be pay to play. So, how does this game hold up to other mmos already out there?

Gods and Heroes

First off the game is set in a more unused setting for mmos, which is based in ancient Rome. It combines aspects from both historical and mythical elements in Rome's history to portray unique world for players to dive into. Personally, I love ancient history; particularly Roman history is fairly fascinating. So it wouldn't surprise you to hear that I actually looked forward to giving this game a first glance, and see if they made a game that lives up to that point in history.

The character creation in the game is decent, and is a little bit better than you would see in a standard mmo. It basically mixes what you see from the pick your face in most mmorpgs, to the slider bars in others to do a bit more touchup of the features. Overall it is a mix of two simple character designs which are decent, yet enough to make you look a bit different from the crowd. The game also does feature currently four classes, but by how it is set up there may be more on their way. For this playthrough I went with the Gladiator, which I mean, common, what else should you be in ancient Rome? Beyond some dull politician who would get stabbed to death by a mob. There is a bit more to the character creation, in that at the end you do get two choices for a god to follow, who bestows you with certain abilities as their favor and which benefit your class. There is two gods per class to choose from, and it seemed to be more of personal taste than certain abilities, because they didn't really mention anything in the creation phase. Though by looking at the site it does seem that they have different elements, but the core of the abilities seem to be similar. How different they are in actual play through, I have not seen yet.

Traversing through the plains of mystical Rome can be challenging and tiresome.... Well, mostly tiresome in this game. One of the major flaws I have found in the game is that while you travel a lot, there is no real quick way to get from point a to point b. The game does not feature an auto walk system, nor does it provide any way to teleport or be transported to far off places in the current map you are in, at least not from what I have found. Overall I found traveling just to be tiresome and more trouble than it was worth.
