Recently, Salem, a Sandbox MMO with a perma-death system was announced by Paradox Interactive. (You can find that article here.) We recently were given the chance to have an interview with Seatribe (the developer for Salem) by Paradox Interactive. I would like to personally thank Paradox for making the interview possible and Seatribe for taking the time to answer our questions.

Michael Fuchs (MMOSite): Could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your position with Seatribe?

Björn Johannessen (Seatribe): Seatribe is just me and a friend. We don't really have positions per se. I guess you could call me a designer.

Michael Fuchs (MMOSite): If you could describe Salem in three words, how would you do so? And why?

Björn Johannessen (Seatribe): While I normally write in complete sentences, "Cute-Gothic" "Sandbox" and "MMO" are three words that I would probably use.

Salem - Alpha Footage

Michael Fuchs (MMOSite): Could you tell us a bit about what players will be able to do in Salem?

Björn Johannessen (Seatribe): Build, farm, fish, hunt, explore. Plenty of cooking. :)

Michael Fuchs (MMOSite): The press release states that Salem takes place in a “sandbox like environment”. What limitations are in place to make Salem “sandbox like” and not a total sandbox MMO, like Wurm Online?

Björn Johannessen (Seatribe): None. It's a sandbox game, quite simply.

Michael Fuchs (MMOSite): Will there be quests in the game, or is it truly a sandbox where players will be free to do as they want and create their “own in-game stories”?

Björn Johannessen (Seatribe): There are no quests in the game. Setting goals is entirely at the discretion of the players.

Michael Fuchs (MMOSite): You boast that the game features a perma-death system. What is to stop players from griefing each other or completely ruining a newbie's experience with the game?

Björn Johannessen (Seatribe): The fact that you need a developed character to do that, and the fact that doing that puts said developed character at risk of dying.
