Chinese WoW gamers will soon be able to have fun in the "new" expansion - Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK). At 9:45 p.m. on August 9 Beijing Time (i.e. August 9 8:45 a.m. EST), WoW's publisher in Mainland, China – NetEase announced on its official site that WoW: WotLK had passed the examination of the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China. It's said that the expansion's client will be made available for players to download on August 17.
WotLK, which Chinese gamers have been waiting for since two years ago, is finally about to arrive. Though to be operated soon, it will still have to face numerous challenges. First, it will be inaccessible to those younger than 15, and those who want to play WotLK will have to register accounts with real names. According to insiders, the Chinese WotLK will not only keep the previous modifications (e.g. the meat-covered undead characters and the "box" world filled with "boxes") valid, but also further make lots of modifications. Meanwhile, due to the great amount of bloody and violent elements and something prone to misguide players, the starting quests designed for Death Knight must be changed beyond recognition, too.

As a result of the outdated version, a large number of old players have quit Chinese WoW in recent years. Many players either play other games or switch over to the Taiwanese WoW, even the European and American ones. The opening of Chinese WoW: WotLK is undoubtedly good news for NetEase, but the company still has to worry about the upcoming challenge: WotLK is about to be updated to Cataclysm outside Mainland, China.
