Surviving an MMO Launch By Vasily Tedeev V is happy that he took up writing again, something he had dreamed of doing ever since he was nine years old. Being a nonconforming combination of a social party animal and a gamer, he realized that his life amounted not to just games and women, but that he had to pursue his passions and self-development in other areas as well. |
Do you know that tingly kind of excitement that you get when an MMO you've been waiting for is just around the corner? There is this feeling of pleasantness in the air, like a new adventure is about to begin. We all have an upcoming game we are hyped about. Some are almost at our doorstep while others seem fairly distant but regardless, the time will come and launch day will be upon us.
The start of a fresh MMO can be considered a mini-holiday in the hearts and minds of gamers. However, not all launches are the same and some may leave us with feelings of burn-out, physical exhaustion, rage and even destroyed relationships. I kid :) Read this guide to increase your chances of surviving the impeding event!
Tip#1 - Make time
Stepping into a new game world is a delicate process that requires enough time to be fully enjoyable. Who wants to worry about deadlines and work when you have a shiny new game waiting to be picked up? Thought so! Ensure that you won't be disturbed by getting a day off work, skipping school or locking yourself in a room and throwing away the key. Your time is precious so use it wisely, bold adventurer.
Tip#2 - See them off
Your siblings, your wife, girlfriend, real-life friends and others - get in touch with them at least once and spend some time together because guaranteed, when launch day comes, you will not be seeing them for a while. Doing so should prevent random invitations to go out, unexpected break-ups and family visits to see if you are OK.
Tip#3 - Manage your stocks
No one wants to be the guy who had to run out to get food and drinks right before the first wave of players is logging in. Avoid such foolery and stock up on your favourite grub. Bonus points for buying pizzas, hot pockets, crisps and other consumables typically associated with gamers. Critical provisions include lots of alcohol and energy drinks to keep you going.
