Guild Wars 2 unveiled ranger profession last week with a pile of introductions. Today, Eric Flannum, the Lead Game Designer answers some questions in regard to ranger, including weapons, skills, and pet.
About longbow, shortbow and arrows - Longbow and shortbow are different. Shortbows are more lightweight and mobile while longbows are more powerful but inflexible; shortbows can activate skills like Spread Shot on the move while longbows can activate Barrage. Most arrows or projectiles can be dodged, but there are some auto tracking projectiles that can't be.
About the skills and abilities - Several rangers can deploy the same trap at the same time and will cause stacked effects accordingly. Whether a trap or spirit affects allies, enemies, or both is based upon the individual spirit or trap in question. For example, Sun Spirit only buffs allies.
Pets - Pets don't wear armors and cannot be dyed. Players can revive a pet generally done at melee range, but there are skills that you can slot to revive the pets at range. All pets have a maximum evolution levels of 20 in additional to their basic levels. Evolution levels give pets additional skills and abilities. What's more, the pet's skills are controlled by AI.
About the skills in the ranger videos
Q: Was the torch used during the creation of Sun Spirit in the Spread Shot skill video, and is it necessary for activating this skill?
A: The skill seen in the Spread Shot video is not Sun Spirit; it’s actually a torch skill called Bonfire. The Bonfire skill creates a persistent fiery location at the targeted location, whereas Sun Spirit summons a spirit that buffs all allies in a certain radius.
Q: In the Whirling Defense skill video, what is deflected? Projectile spells or ranged attacks? And is Whiling Defense a stance or more of a channeled ability?
A: Anything that is designated as a blockable projectile can be deflected with Whirling Defense, which is a channeled ability. This includes things such as arrows, bullets, and fireballs.
