  • Summary: I have rather enjoyed my time playing Divine Souls BETA and will definitely continue to play. With the targetless battle system and the terrific soundtrack, this is definitely a game I will be keeping installed on my computer for future play. The team at Outspark has really outdone themselves with this title; it is genuinely a great addition to their franchise.

Divine Souls Beta Review

By Daniel Owens

To better my writing skills and establish a presence in the MMO gaming community are the passions that bring me here, I enjoy writing about new and upcoming MMO's. My goal is to bring to the reader as many promising MMO's as I can find. Offering insight and advice on what's worth playing.

Outspark have just launched the CBT (Now OBT) for their latest MMO Divine Souls. While Divine Souls is classified as an MMO, it comes across as more of an online dungeon crawler. The game takes place in a fantasy setting; each player is on a story driven quest to become an "enlightened one", a Divine Soul.

The Beta is set to run until July 21st, 3pm PDT. With a current level cap of 40, over 100 in-game items, over 80 quests per class (excluding side quests) and 5 maps with over 20 different dungeons there is plenty on offer for interested punters.

Gameplay

As an Action-Fighting game, Outspark have done a great job on providing some interesting gameplay elements that will definitely be refreshing for most gamers. Players use a mixture of keyboard keys and the mouse to perform combos, for example with a slasher class; left click, left click, left click, right click combo performs several sweeping sword attacks finally launching the enemies into the air.

This combo itself opens up the opportunity to chain a whole other combo in mid-air combat finished off with throwing a claymore on the ground inflicting AOE damage to mobs surrounding you. To compliment these combos, the battle system doesn't require any targeting. Whatever your weapon lands on is what is hit, allowing you to attack multiple targets at once with just one click of the mouse.

An interesting aspect of the combat within Divine Souls is the ability to pick up mobs, by pressing the E key you are able to pick up a mob and perform some brand new combos, such as throwing the mob into the air and performing a few quick attacks.

As shown in the picture above there are already quite a few combos on offer and most can be chained together if you're clever.

Something worth noting is that Outspark have made Xbox 360 Gamepads for PC compatible with Divine Souls, this works straight out of the box and works quite well with the game. Some of you will be biased about this, I know a lot of people believe the only way to truly excel at an MMO is with a keyboard and mouse. This is not the case with Divine Souls, the required amount of keys to play is very minimal, making the conversion to gamepad quite a viable option.

Character Creation

The current character creation system is rather limited at this time, but gives a good taste of what is on offer. So far there are 3 classes to choose from:

Slashers - Wielding a sword that can transform into a long bladed chain, this class is the master of swordplay. Think of this as the equivelant of a rogue in other MMO's, this class is fast and can chain together combos with great efficiency.

Fighter - Basically the tanks of Divine Souls, Fighters throw around and beat down their opponents with furious force. Definitely the class of choice for those who favour the Warrior class within other MMO's.
