Today I would like to introduce Heroes of Newerth (short for HoN), a real-time strategy game made by S2 Games based on the Warcraft III scenario Defense of the Ancients otherwise known as (DotA). Because of their common points, I will do a comparative analysis between HoN and DotA below. First of all, let me express my opinion. As a hardcore DotA fan, I won't devalue DotA, but I will introduce HoN and make a contrast with DotA impersonally. Hopefully my analysis would be helpful to those who have just joined HoN or have not yet decided to join HoN.
Brief intro to DotA and HoN
Let me introduce DotA briefly first. DotA is a custom map for Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. DotA has experienced increasing popularity over time because of its outstanding balanced gameplay, abundant heroes and endless strategies. DotA is even the only RPG map recognized by Blizzard. If you ask me what the most popular game in colleges is, I will tell you it must be DotA without hesitation. Innumerous DotA matches have been played in colleges. On most gaming platforms, most on-line people take part in DotA. I got to DotA after the release of DotA 6.43. I once witnessed the peak of team VP in dagger era. I also witnessed the comedown of the former top 3 DotA teams, the gradual comedown of the intelligence heroes that are mainly developed to destroy turrets, the fast rise of agility heroes, as well as the current mainstream to develop heroes from multiple aspects. I may be not a pretty good DotA player, but I think I've been pretty familiar with DotA.
HoN is a 3D online game developed by S2 Games (based in the United States) based on DotA. In its Closed Beta released last year, there were only 42 heroes. Now there are 61 heroes. Amongst them, 9 heroes were created by S2 Games. Even though there are not as many heroes as in DotA, S2 Games has worked hard on HoN. At present, lots of teams imitate DotA to develop games. However many games of the kind are merely inferior products. While League of Legends (short for LoL) features a bit too much on player interaction and seems somewhat different from DotA in my opinion. Hopefully HoN could grant players different experience.
In contrast with DotA
HoN has many many things in common with DotA no matter in gaming modes, heroes' skills and spells, maps, and more. Nevertheless, because they were developed in different ages, the two games were developed using different engines. The DotA development team had to rely on the engine used to develop Warcraft 3. As a result, ICEFROG (the current DotA map designer) has to bypass when they attempt to make some changes to DotA. Consequently, I have to acknowledge HoN features better than DotA.
