On March 12, Torchlight won both the Game Industry News' RPG Game of the Year Award, and the Game Developer's Conference Choice Award for Best Debut. The game's developer Runic Games explained in the award acceptance speech how they achieved success in the PC Torchlight, and disclosed they're considering the development of Torchlight 2. Though this is great news for all Torchlight fans, the game's online version is still under development with the launch date not confirmed as well. The developer used to express that they would release the console version of Torchlight, but no more related info can be gained for the moment. Although Runic Games doesn't seem like a liar, it's still hard to say whether these anticipated projects will be delayed like Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2.
The Game Industry News' RPG Game of the Year Award was granted based on the players' votes, while the Game Developer's Conference Choice Award for Best Debut was granted based on the award committee's selection.
In the acceptance speech, Travis Baldree, CEO & Project Lead of Runic Games, extended sincere thanks to everyone in the company, and also to Perfect World (publisher of Torchlight) for allowing Runic Games to realize their ideas.
Runic Games also applauded other nominated games, including The Maw, Zeno Clash, League of Legends and Spider: the Secret of Bryce Manor (iPhone).
