Call of Duty MMO: How It Could Work

By Daniel Owens

To better my writing skills and establish a presence in the MMO gaming community are the passions that bring me here, I enjoy writing about new and upcoming MMO's. My goal is to bring to the reader as many promising MMO's as I can find. Offering insight and advice on what's worth playing.

So yesterday we heard from Nextgn.com that Infinity Ward has started working on an MMO, and everyone has begun spreading rumours and speculation that it may be based in the Call Of Duty universe.

"Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing statement hints at a 2010 announcement: 2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise. In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."

If this is so, how would they accomplish this? MMOFPS never has really truly touched even the trimming of what an actual MMO is and how it should be achieved. This got me thinking, how could a CoD MMO really work? This is how I would do it.

Gameplay

Infinity War (besides their IWNet) has done a great job with the multiplayer aspect of the franchise, and a blockbuster effort with their single player campaigns. I would keep both cornerstones of this franchise within the MMO, same play-style and same mechanics. Of course the single player campaigns of late haven't been geared towards co-op play so it would have to be tweaked in a sense that the cinematic moments would need to either be removed or approached in a way that it could cater for an entire group of say 5 people, which when thought about, isn't too hard to do.

So to get things moving, picture in your head exactly what you see from Call Of Duty now, FPS Gameplay.

The World

I wouldn't go as far as saying that I would pick a real country, but the option is there. You can take say, a whole state of a country or create one and turn it into your game world. We already know developers can make large, seemingly endless worlds, so why would it be any different for a CoD MMO?

Think of say Azeroth, then take each of the cities and towns within Azeroth and change it to a modernized City, Village, Military Base, Outpost. Now you have a huge world, with plenty to explore and do. Players would still have starting zones of course, being certain Military Bases where you begin your training, but then it's off into the big wide open world.
