Many online game publishers usually proudly claim that their products are "WoW killers" in the early days of game release. But actually, lots of online games successively expose their weak points before WoW, like Warhammer Online and Age of Conan. As time goes, the game publishers become more mature and finally realize that they are unable to catch up with WoW which reaps an incredibly big profit.
Recently, some online game developers have taken interviews with MCV and disclosed some thoughts generated when they compete with WoW.
Rob Smith, COO of Jagex, insists that no online game can take over WoW as the king in the online game industry in the year 2010 or at least in the short term, though 2010 will mainly be a year of online games (new well-known projects like Star Trek Online. Final Fantasy XIV and All Points Bulletin are to debut this year).
(Jagex is a browser game development company, and is crowned as the leading enterprise in the Java game industry since most of its products are developed by using the Java language)
Anyway, Smith is basically right. And it's surely possible that 2010 will be a year of the virtual farm - FarmVille.
While WoW has more than 11.5 million online gamers, over 73.8 million people worldwide enjoy FarmVille each day. FarmVille is the most popular vegetable growing game on Facebook, and has attracted 100+ million "farmers" around the world. Every day, there're people who pay dollars for virtual ploughs. 500 thousand ploughs can be sold each day, bringing the developer annual revenues of 100+ million US dollars.
