The chronicles of Spellborn is an MMORPG made by a Dutch game developer. It contains many unique features and oozes atmosphere.

It was highly anticipated before its release, but after the beta release, it was soon clear that it was not all that successful in the pay to play model. This forced them to go into redevelopment. The Chronicles of Spellborn will now become free to play with a cash shop. They currently have the servers running and are allowing everyone to play completely for free in its original state while the game is being redeveloped.

So I decided to give it another try.

I'm sure most of you have already heard of it and some of you may have possibly tried it out.

The game is set in a post apocalyptic world, and offers features such as a combat system that allows you to manually aim your skills, a distinct art style with great atmosphere to create a stronger feeling of immersion, and much more. The famous band Within Temptation have also written two songs for The Chronicles of Spellborn, named "The Howling" and "Sounds of Freedom".

There are two races : Humans and Daevi, and three archetypes to choose from:

Each archetype has three disciplines that you may choose from which are similar to a class advancement.

When you create your character you are offered a lot of options to personalise and create a unique look from the very beginning, such as clothing , armour , tattoo patterns and even your voice.

Shards:

You start on a shard with an enclave settlement called "Parliament".

"The Shards are remnant pieces of the Ancestor World floating within the Deadspell Storm.

They usually shield their interior habitat (oppidan and levee) from outside influences with a gigantic carapace (consisting out of an inner and an outer carapace) stretching over it.

Shards should not be confused with Fragments, which might be as large but lack a carapace.

Nor should they be confused with Raftyards, which are considerably smaller, also lack a carapace and are man-made".

The original combat system uses a manual aim feature and a skill deck system, using a rotating wheel in which you strategically set combos. This game actually requires some player skill when it comes to combat which cannot be said for the majority of MMORPG's out at the moment.

Your gear is mainly for apearence as it doesn't benefit your character statistically. Instead, your equipment acquires addons through sigils. Three new sigil slots may be added to your skills every three levels, starting from level 10. While playing, you are able to discover new sigils, earn them or even make your own. However, don't rely too heavily on sigil infused equipment for your survival, as it is predominantly your tactics that determine your success when it comes to fighting.

The world is large and expansive. There are many quests, each containing immersive dialogue, cut scenes and a decent level cap.

There are also a few instanced areas, the tutorial ship being an example. The game has both a pve and pvp server plus an arena for players to complete in for the hopes of a statue being erected in town in their honor.
