How to Play Aion on Wii?

KeyWords: Aion, wii, Targus Bluetooth adapter, Blue Soleil

  • Summary: Long-time MMO play would be bad for your health? Mana Energy Potion just overthrew this saying today. Considering that we may be going to play a lot of Aion over the next few months, Mana created a new way to play Aion so that we can level up our fitness as well as our characters. Let's see how is Mana going to do it: 'We decided to hook a treadmill to the game so to run forward we had to run at over 6mph on the treadmill, and if we wanted to fly, we'd have to flap our arms, look silly, but tone our upper bodies. Eli doesn't need to get in any better shape, but I certainly do.'

We decided to hook a treadmill to the game so to run forward we had to run at over 6mph on the treadmill, and if we wanted to fly, we'd have to flap our arms, look silly, but tone our upper bodies. Eli doesn't need to get in any better shape, but I certainly do.

Step 1: Hooking Wiimotes to Aion

Download the GlovePIE script here: workout.PIE

We used a Targus Bluetooth adapter and installed Blue Soleil to connect our wiimotes to our PC. Blue Soleil is great, because it doesn't require a passkey when you pair the PC with the wiimotes. Once the wiimotes were connected, we used GlovePIE to translate the data from the wiimotes into useful keypresses in Aion. The keys are a piece of cake to map, but getting the script to accurately represent flap speed using the accelerometers in the wiimotes required a couple lines of scripting. The script detects a flap as exceeding a certain acceleration in the relative y-axis of the wiimote, then decides if that flap happened soon enough after the previous flap to count. If so, it stops holding down the F (fall) key and starts holding down the R (rise) key until the flapping becomes too slow.

Step 2: Hooking the Treadmill to Aion

Because the mouse we had couldn't track as fast as we could run on the treadmill, we had to build a bicycle tire assembly to gear down the speed of the treadmill so the mouse could sense it. This was surprisingly easy and was made of 2x4s from Home Depot (where they'll cut them to length for you!). All you need to do is screw them together and drill holes for the bicycle tire axle. We hooked the mouse to the PC through USB into GlovePIE and made a script that translates forward mouse speeds into W presses so that your character runs forward in game when you run forward in RL.

Step 3: Get Fit?

Eli and I (.aaron) did a time trial to the Veteron Citadel to see who could make it there first. Eli's time: 2:37, with a fairly even split between flying and running. My time: 2:00. Granted, he got lost in the water and had to fly over the wall instead of going through the gate.

Even though it was only a 2 minute run, I was sweating profusely by the end, and I could feel the burn in my shoulders from waving around the wiimotes at arm's length. It was survivable though, and I could see questing this way because it would be run, stop, fight, fly and fight, stop, run some more, stop. Apparently, this is very similar (or is) interval training, which is supposed to be an excellent way to cardio train and to burn fat.

Step 4: Using This Every Day

I really liked doing this, and I could certainly use the exercise. The one issue we had with the setup was that sometimes I couldn't get GlovePIE to "swallow" the mouse so we could use a second mouse to control the game for serious gameplay. We realized a much better way to do this would be to hook a wiimote to the rim of the bike wheel and sense the centripetal force using the accelerometers. Then the mouse is totally free to be used in game. The updated script for using a third wiimote is here: workoutNoMouse.PIE
