It's not very often that a mod to a game creates an entire genre, but that is just what is happening with Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a popular mod to Warcraft III. The idea is simple: take the player and plant them firmly within a real-time strategy game in the role of one of the heroes. The result: one of the coolest RPG/RTS PvP arena games this decade.

While Demigod and the upcoming League of Legends: Clash of Fates are based on the same concept, Heroes of Newerth takes it a step forward by essentially being DotA in full game form. DotA can be both engaging and addicting, but it can also be quite frustrating, with an unwielding interface being force-fitted into an engine never meant to do exactly what they are doing.

So the best praise that can be given to Heroes of Newerth is that it is a true interpretation of DotA minus much of the frustration. The in-game interface is much better -- no more losing your hero because you accidentally clicked the ground or using different hotkeys for each hero -- and it is easier to join games by using a filter to narrow the list to a game of your liking. This includes being able to filter by 'noob only' games, 'single draft' game or specific maps. The game also keeps up with leaver percentages, which means you can lock out players who frequently leave mid-game.
