In a GDC Europe talk, NCsoft's Yongchan Jee intriguingly, lead designer of Aion, discussed the creation of Aion, the upcoming subscription MMO from the City Of Heroes and Lineage publisher, explaining the design elements that have made it a Korean hit.

Talking about Aion, the lead designer explained modestly that Aion has a long way to go compared with Lineage 2 and World Of Warcraft and the traditional MMORPG market was in the process of stagnating in South Korea while MMO Casual Games were getting more and more popular. Acturely, Aion have great succeed in China and Korea online-game market and supplied the championship of TOP 10 Hottest Game Ranking List which used to belonging to WoW. And it will be the another global game of NCsoft in September.

Aion's growth didn't proceed smoothly without a hitch which even was reset in 2006 and it "mostly started from ground zero". Such limitations in number of experienced developers on the team result in the game design challenges "became a lot more difficult still."

Jee was very proud of their flight system, one of the most unique element in Aion, which is pretty to look at, but "may be difficult to control" for some gamers. The game design was heavily influenced by the wish to include community-friendly features in it, and both satisfy the high-end PvP (player vs. player) gamers and the larger bulk of PvE (player vs. environment) gamers. That's why the 'faction warfare' game angle was created, for both PvP and PvE users.

When was asked whether some World Of Warcraft characters could be considered 'ugly' and therefore less enticing to play, he said: "That is why the Korean players were a lot more into the Alliance than the Horde." And the situation wasn't changed until the 'better-looking' blood elves were added to the Horde. Maybe that is the reason the looks of AION characters are so beautiful. XD~.
