The Republic of Rogwel - Chapter 1
For centuries after the shattering, the Rogwel continent lay in ruin. The inhabitants struggled to build a new nation, modeled after the old world, and they tried desperately to regain the technology and learning their ancestors had once known. However, many generations had passed before their salvation came: the Maestros.
The Maestros had been the luminaries of the past. They pioneered a great many of the old world's technological developments, and they had been instrumental in bringing society into a golden age of peace and convenience. However, afraid of their influence on the populace and paranoid that they would betray him, the old King had banished them. Now, centuries later, the King of Rogwel reached his hand out to the Maestros. He sought to make amends with them, hoping their knowledge of machinery would once again revitalize the world.

The new generation of Maestros was wary of the blossoming monarchy. After their ancestors had been betrayed by the kings of old, their technology had been misused. The Maestros were convinced that the shattering of the world came about from an irresponsible and overzealous consumption of Neo Steam. They were unsure if they could trust Rogwel to not repeat the same mistakes of the past. Ultimately, a large portion of the Maestros joined Rogwel, under the condition that they be given the power to oversee Neo Steam consumption in each town. The remaining Maestros, afraid that this new society would only be as corrupt as the previous, set their sights on the Kingdom of Elerd, which was founded with an emphasis on magic rather than on technology.
Soon after the Maestros' relocation, Rogwel flourished. However, as the Maestros feared, it was accompanied by corruption. A rebel movement arose, and with the Maestros' help, the antiquated monarchy was overthrown. Unsure what direction Rogwel would take after that, the citizens turned to the Maestros for guidance. They drafted a new government: a republic, with an elected High Council. The Maestros themselves chose to continue overseeing each town's resource consumption and serve as guides to help direct the nation, with no official political power, but their influence within the republic has been undeniable ever since its founding.

What is Steampunk?
The Genre The term "steampunk" refers to an alternate world, usually set in the past but not exclusively, in which the inventions and conveniences of today have been largely recreated (or replaced) by advanced, steam-powered alternatives. Steampunk fiction often takes place in a pseudo-Victorian era, right around the time the historical Industrial Revolution was (pardon the pun) picking up steam. However, many steampunk fiction-writers have been known to set their societies in other time periods, including the distant future. Others have been known to not model their society off of anything we know and opt for a brand new, fantasy world. But whatever the time period, the key feature of steampunk is steam!
