News from Kotaku, we learned that Square Enix is still working hard on a "flagship" MMOG to take the place of Final Fantasy XI.

Final Fantasy XI Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix as part of the Final Fantasy series. It has been over five years since it launched all over the world. SE noted that it still has a strong user base of around 500,000 subscribers. Four expansions for the game have been released, capitalizing on the game's success.

But Square Enix Boss Yoichi re-affirmed that while Final Fantasy XI was still quite profitable for the company, it couldn't last forever, during an address to investor last month.

Speaking of this "transition", Wada says that, as FFXI winds down, "the question is where do we go from here, and we are currently developing a post-FFXI flagship title". Interesting that he calls it a "flagship" title, suggesting that instead of just switching to a more casual-friendly MMO like the company's existing Nicotto Town, it'll be something more substantial.
