Valentine's Day on Feb. 14th is a very important day for every couple around the world, and it is only once a year... However, Chinese couples are lucky because there are two Valentine's Days in China, one is on Feb. 14th, the other is on Jul. 7th (Chinese lunar calendar), and Chinese people call it Qi Xi, the Chinese Valentine's Day.

Qi Xi stems from a romantic tragedy about the 7th daughter of the Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherder. The handsome cowherder lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law. After his parents passed away, his brother inherited the house and the land. The boy only owned an old cow. The 7th daughter of the Emperor was good at handcrafting, especially weaving clothing. So she was called a Weaving Maid. The Emperor liked her skill to weave clouds and rainbows to beautify the world.

The cow, however, was a former god who had violated imperial rules and was sent to earth in bovine form for a lifetime of punishment. With the guidance of the cow, the cowherder and Weaving Maid met and fell in love. So they married and had a son and a daughter. The Emperor realized that his 7th daughter was missing and nobody was weaving clouds and rainbows anymore. He sent his daughter's grandmother to find the missing daughter and to bring her back.

While the 7th princess was returning to Heaven with her grandmother, the cowherder chased after his wife. The grandmother made a milky way in the sky with her hairpin, which kept them separated. Now one lover is stranded on each side of the Milky Way. Magpies were moved by the true love, and many of them gathered and formed a bridge for the couple to meet in the evening of the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.

In bygone days, Qi Xi was not only a special day for lovers, but also for girls. In the past, girls would conduct a ceremony to beg Weaving Maid for wisdom, dexterity and a satisfying marriage in the future. The festival also varied from region to region. In some parts of Shandong Province, young women offered fruit and pastries to pray for a bright mind. In other regions, seven close friends would gather to make dumplings. Young women in southern China used to weave small handicrafts with colored paper, grass and thread.
