Why Should We Play Games?

KeyWord: MMORPG
Summary:Why should we play games? It´s just for fun? Maybe it isn´t. Even we have konwn gaming is costly, we still love it. Why? Jason Fryer has some thoughts up over at gamerhelp.com on gaming. He listed 11 reasons why we play game. It looks interesting.

# 7: The "Eureka" Moment
We have all done it. At least, if you are honest with yourself, you will admit it. Link runs around Hyrule for days but can not be led into further progress in the game. Everything has been checked and double checked but still there is no way to continue forward in the dungeon. It is impossible. You think, ´there´s a freaking glitch in my game.´ And then and calling on your problem solving skills you think,´oh, wait a minute. Why didn´t I see that before?´

The gratification the player gets from overcoming some grueling obstacle or enemy in a game after many failed attempts is something that is hard to match in the real world. And that "eureka" moment, that virtually all gamers have experienced at one time or another, is one of the biggest reasons why we return to the same video game time after time. Triumphing over something you once thought impossible is another reason why many are so passionate about gaming.

Examples: The Legend of Zelda series, the God of War series

# 6: It Feels Good to Be Bad
Very few humans can truly be considered evil. Practically everyone has a social conscious and realizes there is a limit to what actions can be taken. A lot of criminals serving their time in prison even know there are consequences for their actions, at the very least being stuck in a dank cell rotting away while being cut off from everyone in their life. Nothing makes breaking the law right, but in games there are no consequences. Controlling a video game character allows the player to let loose. The goal may be to drive 3 blocks down the street, but you decide to run over six pedestrians on the way. The thought would not cross your mind in real life, but it makes you laugh when you see it in the game. Do you have to hit that random person sixteen times with a baseball bat? No, but why not make it seventeen. More and more games are presenting moral choices to gamers. And to top the pleasure one can get from being evil, in many games the gameplay is different depending on the choices you make. In the world of video games, being bad ain?t all that bad.

Examples: Grand Theft Auto, Knights of the Old Republic, BioShock, Destroy All Humans
