In a post on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Jim Rossignol shared his thoughts on MMO design.
"Eve Online is a better model for making an MMO than World Of Warcraft. If someone, right now, was looking for a way to create an interesting MMO they should take Eve as their mechanical gameplay model, and not WoW." he said.
There are some interesting thoughts, but maybe it´s an EVE love fest, he cautions:
Now that doesn´t necessarily mean that Eve Online is a better MMO than World Of Warcraft. Eve is messed up and broken in all kinds of outrageous ways, and the PvP-heavy spaceship-centric world design puts most people off the idea completely. What it does mean is that there´s the potential for a better MMO to be built using the principles that Eve has pioneered. So forget what you know, or think you know, about Eve Online and imagine instead what World Of Warcraft would be like if it were designed with the same principles as Eve Online.
This is a thought experiment. It requires that you try to imagine what the most successful MMO in the world would be like if its design principles were quite different. (Less successful, probably, but still...) It would look similar on the surface, and have the same fantasy-world design that we all know and love, but its innards, its workings and functions, and the experience of playing it, would be rather different.
First and foremost:
There would be no levels. You would not level up, you would simply collect skills over time.
Players reacted differently towards this article. some said " Its mostly true, even though I only played eve for a short time, its just a fantastic MMO, just how its laid out... Plus my fav aspect is that the entire political stratum is governed by the players and not set up by the game. Its one of the only non-static MMOs... ", while another player said "Honestly, I don´t think this reviewer has any idea what hes talking about. EVE and WoW are very similar in the "massive grindfest" and turning a game into a second job aspect. Unfortunately they can´t be compared too much farther than that.
EVE is boring on an epic scale. Like others have stated, most of your time will be spent doing one or two repetitive tasks for the entire existance of your game career. Sure you can do everything, it will only take you a total of 2 years to do everything optimally. You´ll either be a "hunter" or a "gatherer." If you expect to do both well, be prepared to buy multiple accounts. No actually, you´ll probably want multiple accounts even if you only plan on doing one of those anyways.
WOW is boring in that you run the same dungeons over and over and over again, collecting shinies, trying to claw your way to the top in your guild for respect and etc. Then in a few months, Blizzard opens a new area, starts a new arena season, releases new items from some rare spawn, that makes nearly all your previous year(s) of work completely worthless. Sure you gained personal skill of playing your character, but with the CONSTANT readjusting, balancing, and nerfing of classes, don´t get too comfy with any particular playstyle."
Do you prefer EVE to WoW? What´s your opinion? We welcome everyone to share his thoughts with us. Enjoy discussing.
