Recently, many Chinese players are discussing fervently about the story where a player spent RMB 280,000 (approximately US 37,270 dollars) in order to win a virtual weapon in World of Legend, an MMORPG published by Shanda Interactive Entertainment in China.
In July, Shanda launched an event to commemorate the fourth year anniversary of World of Legend. The event rules indicate that starting from July 21 till August 31, any player who charges the most money into his/her game account will win an ultimate weapon in World of Legend. After the event kicked off, World of Legend players competed fiercely in order to grab the weapon. By 16 pm, August 27, according to the official ranking board, the player ranked first had charged RMB 165,000 into his account, followed by another player who had charged RMB 154,000. When the event ended, the official website of World of Legend announced that the weapon goes to the player who has charged RMB 283,000. It also revealed that the top 20 participants in the event have charged more than RMB 1.7 million into their accounts.
Many netizens are shocked and questioning whether it´s worthy to spend such a huge amount of money just in order to win an in-game weapon and they´re wondering how will the winner consume the money he has charged. Maybe, someday, he will regret for what he has done.
Shanda noted that, players not only can enjoy the value-added service in World of Legend with the money, but also they can enjoy other value-added services offered by Shanda, for example, spending it in other Shanda games or for online reading, etc. Shanda also stated that players spent the money on a voluntary basis, which is their personal choice, and indicating that they identify with their values.
