Japan-based Sega announced through its official site that Sci-Fi MMORPG RF Online will stop its operation in Japan from Feb. 28, 2007. From Dec. 19, 2006 till its stop of operation, players can buy RF Online service voucher (worth about ?7) for playing RF Online. Sega¡¯s announcement seems to conflict with its recent market moves, including introducing new items into RF Online. And it may exert a heavy impact on the Japanese gaming industry. As early as in September 2004, RF Online was licensed to Sega at Tokyo Game Show and in last October, it started commercial operation in Japan.
The main reason for Sega to make a decision to terminate the contract is because they could not real an agreement on the renewal of the license agreement. CCR staffl revealed, "CCP indeed had some unpleasant experience with Sega during the discussion about the renewal of RF Online contract. But CCR will continue to run RF Online in Japan. Currently, CCR is seeking a qualified agent and is negotiating with some candidate companies. We will soon work out an outcome."
So, according to CCR, even if it terminates the contract with Sega, RF Online will continue to be operated in Japan, though through another publisher. However, both Sega and CCR did not give any explanation as whether Sega will transfer all the player materials to the new publisher and how the in-game item issue will be solved. RF Online¡¯s fate in Japan is still unpredictable.
