Mobile devices can contain both sophisticated audio software and numerous control buttons, making it possible to produce a wide range of sounds based on user interaction. The author discusses the art and science of creating audio UI for handheld hardware, and how interactive music techniques can be helpful when designing audio interfaces. Three versions of Sidekicks, the General Magic PDA, and other devices, will be used to demonstrate tricks of the trade.
